Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF)

Acid detergent fibre (ADF) comprises cellulose and lignin. In the usual ADF analysis, silicic acid and silicates are also included. These components can be determined and deducted by subsequent ashing. The ADF content of a feed determined in this way is called "ADForg". The difference between NDForg and ADF gives the hemicellulose content.

The ADForg content of a feed is important when designing rations for dairy cows and is used in particular in Great Britain and North America. The DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft e.V.) gives the target values shown in the following table for the planning of TMR taking NDF, ADF and NFC into account.
