Threonine

Threonine is an essential amino acid and is produced in its pure form as L-threonine (D-form not biologically utilisable by animals) by microorganisms in fermenters. In the fermenters, these microorganisms receive molasses, sugar, starch-containing products and nitrogen sources as a food base. The pure amino acid is then separated via various stages and is available as L-threonine (at least 98 % L-threonine).

In animal nutrition, threonine is used as a single amino acid to ensure the supply of the animals depending on the type of feed and animal species. Particular importance is attached to this single amino acid in the feed for young piglets.
