Urea

Urea has the chemical formula CO(NH2)2, contains at least 45 % N (nitrogen) and is used in special feeds for dairy cows and beef cattle to improve the daily supply of nitrogen that is quickly available in the rumen.

Especially in rations with higher contents of easily soluble carbohydrates that are rapidly degraded in the rumen by the rumen microbes (e.g. rations with a high maize silage content, grass silages rich in sugar and higher amounts of cereals in the ration), a supply of correspondingly rapidly available nitrogen sources is very important for ensuring microbial protein synthesis. The use of urea in the feeding of dairy cows and beef cattle has proven its worth here.

The usual amounts used in practice are between 40 and 110 g/animal and day. A ration calculation to determine the exact requirement is absolutely necessary.
