Barley

Barley is a cereal species ( Hordeum vulgare) with a short stalk and a long spike. A distinction is made between two groups: the multi-row barley (all three spikes of a flower plane are fertile) and the two-row barley (only the middle spikelet is fertile). Of the many-rowed barley, the original six-rowed (equal-rowed) barley no longer plays a major role; the unequal-rowed (so-called four-rowed) barley provides feed barley. Both varieties are cultivated as summer and winter barley. Two-row barley is the predominantly cultivated crop barley, mostly as spring barley. The high-protein barley provides feed barley, the low-protein (summer) barley malting barley. The starch content (approx. 52 %) and protein content (approx. ten to 13 %) are important for animal feed. This also determines theenergy content. During beer production, various by-products of malting barley are produced for animal feed.Malt germs andbrewer's grains are worth mentioning here.
