Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF)
The neutral detergent fibre (NDF) comprises the hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin and thus essentially represents the plant cell walls. In addition, silicic acid and silicates are also included in the usual NDF analysis. These components can be determined and deducted by subsequent ashing. The NDF content of a feed determined in this way is called "NDForg"
The NDForg content of a feed is important when designing rations for dairy cows and is used in particular in Great Britain and North America. The DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft e.V.) gives the target values shown in the following table for the planning of TMR taking NDF, ADF and NFC into account.
