Non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC)

The non-fibre carbohydrates (NFC) are the soluble carbohydrates such as starch, sugar and pectins in a feed. These cellular ingredients are rapidly fermented in the rumen of ruminants and are thus important for the protein synthesis of the rumen microbes as a source of energy.

The NFC is a calculated quantity that cannot be directly determined analytically.

NFC = dry matter-(crude ash + crude protein + crude fat + NDF)(all data in g/kg T)

The NFC content of a feed is important when designing rations for dairy cows and is used in particular in Great Britain and North America. The DLG (Deutsche Landwirtschaftsgesellschaft e.V.) gives the target values shown in the following table for the planning of TMR taking into account NDF, ADF and NFC.
