Nutrients

The Animal Welfare Act requires the animal keeper, i.e. for every animal in the care of humans, to provide "a diet appropriate to the animal species and its needs" (§2). In order to ensure the health, vitality and performance of the animals, a sufficient supply of the main nutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) is of crucial importance.

The basis of life for all individuals is metabolism. This means the uptake, transformation and release of different nutrients and active compounds. If metabolism comes to a standstill, all other life processes will also come to a standstill very soon. A very important task of the metabolism is the supply of sufficient energy, which is primarily obtained from carbohydrates and fats, but also partly from protein.

In addition to the main nutrients, however, the animal needs other nutrients and active substances to ensure health, vitality and performance. These include the various bulk elements, trace elements and vitamins.
