Crude ash

The crude ash contains the inorganic components of the feed. These are oxides and salts of the bulk and trace elements as well as other inorganic substances (e.g. silicates). The determination of the crude ash is carried out by incinerating a certain amount of feed at 550°C. The difference between the dry matter and the inorganic matter is then determined. The difference between the dry matter (air-dry feed minus the natural moisture escaping during drying at 103°C for four hours, volatile fatty acids and other volatile substances such as natural alcohols) and the crude ash represents the organic matter of a feed. The organic substance includes crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre and the N-free extract substances.
