Vitamin B1

VitaminB1 (thiamine) assumes important functions as a coenzyme in the degradation processes in carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, it is important for the function of nervous tissue and heart muscles as well as for maintaining peristalsis in the gastrointestinal tract. VitaminB1 deficiency can lead to disorders in the nervous system as well as the heart and vascular tissue. The consequences can take the form of growth depression, reduced feed intake, heart muscle damage and even heart failure. Grain and the by-products of grain processing, oil meals (e.g. soybean meal, sunflower meal, rapeseed meal), brewer's yeast and dairy products contain particularly high levels of vitaminB1. Tapioca and dried pulp, on the other hand, are low in vitamin B1. The vitaminB1 found in feedstuffs is easily utilised by the animals. The different needs of the various animal species are ensured by supplementing the appropriate feed with vitaminB1.
