Maize

A cereal plant(Zea mays) introduced from Central America in 1493, growing up to three metres high and belonging to the sweet grasses, whose cultivation has spread all over the world. Either the whole plants are used as green or silage fodder or the grains. The starch content(approx. 61 %) and the fat content (approx. four %) of the maize kernels are very important for animal feed. It is mainly this that determines the energy content. When maize is processed for human nutrition (maize starch and maize germ oil production), various by-products are produced that can be excellently used for animal nutrition. Only corn gluten feed (corn gluten, cornarin) and corn germ extraction meal should be mentioned here.
