Molasses chips

Molasses chips are a by-product of the extraction of sugar (sucrose) from the sugar beet(Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris ssp. altissima). Sugar extraction takes place in several steps: To obtain the raw juice, the washed and shredded beet is leached with water heated to 80 to 90 °C using the countercurrent principle. The wet pulp remains as the residue. Water is removed from the wet pulp by pressing, resulting in pressed pulp. The pressed pulp is then dried to obtain the dried pulp. During the drying process, portions of the sugar beet molasses produced during sugar extraction can be added to the pulp. Depending on the proportion of molasses, a distinction is made between dried pulp (nine to 16 % sugar, 15 % crude fibre), molasses pulp (16 to 23 % sugar, 14 % crude fibre) and high-sugar molasses pulp (over 23 % sugar, 12 % crude fibre). Dry and molasses chips are used in animal nutrition in mixed feed for ruminants(cows, cattle) as an energy-rich component, but also in mixed feed for sows as a dietetically valuable individual feed.
