Manganese

Manganese is a component of important metabolic enzymes in the animal body. It is involved in the formation of the blood pigment haemoglobin, the pigmentation of the hair coat, the development of bones, the detoxification of harmful metabolic products in the body and the regular functioning of sexual functions. A deficiency of manganese can cause disorders in spermatogenesis, fertility disorders in female animals, insufficient laying performance and poor hatching results in poultry and skeletal disorders. An excess of manganese in the diet reduces the utilisation of iron and phosphorus. Blood serum magnesium levels are also lowered. Vegetable feedstuffs, especially hay and various high-quality oil meals (e.g. soybean meal, sunflower meal, etc.) generally contain concentrations of manganese that cover requirements. Absorbability in the animal's gastrointestinal tract may be impaired by an excess of other elements. Should a supplementation of the feed component be necessary in individual animal species for a manganese supply in line with requirements, manganese from mineral sources in the form of sulphate, carbonate or oxide is used in compound feed production.
