Maize germ extraction meal
Maize germ extraction meal is a by-product of starch extraction from maize grains. Maize is degerminated in wet milling after a swelling process. After removal of the husk from the endosperm, mechanical cleaning takes place. In the process, the maize gluten (glutinous protein) is separated and the pure maize starch is obtained. The dissolved maize germ is de-oiled (maize germ oil) and the by-product maize germ extraction meal remains. The product contains approx. 23 % crude protein and approx. 27 % starch. In contrast, maize germ extraction meal from dry milling has a higher starch content (approx. 38 %) and a lower crude protein content (approx. eleven to 12 %). In animal nutrition, maize germ extraction meal is used in the feeding of ruminants(cows, cattle).
