Calcium formate
Calcium formate is the calcium salt of formic acid. It is used especially in feed for rearing piglets as a highly available calcium carrier. This allows the proportion of e.g. calciumcarbonate(feed lime) to be limited. Calcium carbonate has a buffering effect and therefore binds acid in the stomach. A buffered, non-optimal pH value in the stomach is negative for digestion, especially protein digestion. Calcium formate does not buffer, the formic acid content is positive for an even pH value in the stomach.
