Pea
The pea is an annual, fast-growing, mass-growing and protein-rich legume and has a taproot and secondary roots colonised with numerous nodule bacteria. Pisum sativum L. is divided into several subspecies, with the seed peas(Pisum sativum ssp. sativum) and the forage peas(Pisum sativum ssp. arvense) standing out. Forage pea is used for feeding. In animal nutrition, both the crude protein content(approx. 23 %) and the starch content(approx. 41 %) are important. When using fodder pea, the comparatively low content of sulphur-containing amino acids, especially methionine, must be taken into account. The methionine content of the feed formula is supplemented accordingly via other protein components such as soya meal or by adding pure methionine according to the requirements of the animal species to be supplied. Peas are mainly used in recipes for fattening pigs and poultry.
